3 cool people's birthdays today!!
Best Wishes to...
mdavison
cjwatson
rainien!!
I hope you've had a lovely time, all three of you!
Right, so...Eni in a field...
The random silly accident of the day was Eni tripping over a piece of barbed wire, falling headfirst into a load of long grass and ripping a hole in her jeans. Ooops. Well, at least it was my jeans and not my leg! Oh, the wonders of denim!
Fields were extremely cold, but luckily not rainy. We tested soil pH, and took cores of soil to see that it goes all sandy/chalky deep down. We identified lots of plants and toadstools. I am sometimes amazed that people my age can't identify a beech tree - it worries me! I think some of them hadn't seen a Boletus before! I am so grateful to my parents for taking me for walks in the woods right from when I was small and getting me interested in mushrooms and trees and flowers.
We saw fluffy bunnies, which was nice. Their little white tails went bob bob bob as they ran away to hide from 14 undergrads, 2 PhD students and research fellow coming across a field towards them!
By the end of the day, however, I was absolutely frozen and all too ready to go to the German café and pick up a large hot chocolate and chocolate and nut cake. And have a very long, very hot shower! I'm rather drained now, after trekking through forest and field all day! Good thing I wasn't planning on going to any firework displays anyway. I slept in the minibus for half an hour on the way back (was assured by friend next to me that she would ensure no one drew on my face while I napped!).
ETA: It occurs to me that I should probably make it quite clear that in spite of the cold, I had a lovely time and running around in fields is a very Eni-pleasing thing to do!
Also, I hear it is "Baturday"... Well, tempted as I am to google pictures of either
amabat or
doseybat, we'll settle for the winged variety!

Best Wishes to...
