My Rands arrived, hurrah! And they arrived at 8:45am so I could still go into the lab at normal time and had the morning to do...well, as it turned out I didn't do very much, but hey...
In the afternoon I was invigilating. Unlike at Cambridge, here invigilators can wear whatever they like, so I didn't look nearly as scary as I would have if I was invigilating in Cam! ( The experience... )
Also got in contact with second supervisor. Rather embarrassingly, I'd written down his phone number wrong, which explains why I phoned him four times in the last week but he never picked up... So have a meeting early on Monday to discuss last minute plans! Also got one of our nice postdocs to help me with the spectrophotometer, so I can now definitely set it up and make it work, hurrah.
At the weekend, I visited
tuxedo_elf, who is starting to glow and looks positively gorgeous. Her new house is adorable and if it wasn't an hour and a half's travel from the department, I'd move there myself! There is a lovely little white-and-orange kitten living in one of the houses just across from her that makes everyone turn to goo. The people are all nice and friendly. The blackberries are very very juicy (though I got covered in scratches picking them! Alas, the photos didn't come out well). I sorted out Tux and Mr Tux's front garden a bit, which was great fun and involved me falling on my backside in tugs of war with large grass tussocks and things!
I leave you with a couple of pictures. The first is a shot of the lovely horses in the field by Tux's house, taken around sunset...
( Horses out of the window! )
The second is totally unrelated. When I was in Cambridge a couple of weeks back,
ilanin took me up to the top of St John's chapel tower - scariest ascent I've made in YEARS I swear. But ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the view from the top! It was a spectacularly clear day, and we did indeed see Ely Cathedral. Or at least,
ilanin tells me the little white blob is probably Ely Cathedral...
( Ely from Cambridge )
My mum phoned me on the way down. She seemed a little taken aback when I replied with, "Hello there! I'm just coming down from St John's chapel tower!" considering she hadn't even known I was planning to be in Cam that day!!
