As is usual for most things involving my university's admin, ID cards become quite a polaver. The ID card you get when you're first admitted as a PhD student is only for 2 years as , I suppose the theory goes that you have to be upgraded from MPhil to PhD successfully in order to be issued with a new card.
The ID card is essential for getting into and out of the department, especially out of hours.
The problem is that no one tells us when our old ID card will get deactivated, and that once it is, we can't get in and out until we're issued a new one and that's activated. Also, being given a new card is no guarantee that the new card will actually work. Also, the new card isn't issued until we go to re-enrol.
The re-enrolment period is the whole of this week.
Why, then, do they think it's a good idea to deactivate my flatmate's card first thing this morning, and to deactivate mine in the middle of the afternoon?! She managed to obtain a temporary card so she could actually go to the loo without needing a card-holding escort. However, mine was working perfectly this morning. Therefore it came as quite a shock and annoyance to me when, at 6:45pm, I attempted to go home and found that my card, which had been fine that morning, refused to let me out.
Result: Eni traipsing through the department trying to find someone who was still around to let her our. Struck gold on the fifth floor, found the Bat People were still around and looked suitably pathetic so they kindly took pity on me and let me out.
I am praying new card kicks in tomorrow morning.
In completely unrelated and rather better news, the most gorgeous
anuanu has been around once again as of late. If you thought our Anu Boy was gone for good and so stopped keeping up to date on his LJ but, like me, are delighted to have him back, pop on over to his LJ to say hello! And the best news is that he's been writing again! Squeeeee! HotGF is finished in its epic glory, and he's added some naughty little side-stories as a bonus. w00t!
Now I'm back from parents' house I'll definitely be catching up on my reading...
