6 May 2004 19:30The following e-mails were exchanged between myself and my brother (aka The Sheep):
Me: Why would tilting my computer tower thing so one side is about 2cm higher than the other stop it from making those horrible grinding whirring noises that were /really/ starting to get on my nerves?
The Sheep: Hmm. It's probably your case fan. While the computer is on, open the case, stop each fan in turn with your finger (only for a few seconds, especially in the case of the processor fan), and try to work out which fan it is.
You may want to try *cleaning* the fan if it's full of dust, or maybe it needs replacing.
----
P.S. Send this to 25 people or you have bad luck forever >:-)
Me: You realise I only have one fan. I think it's the processor fan. (This comment was based on a previous exclamation I swear I heard him make, something along the lines of: "You don't have a case fan!")

The Sheep: *gobbles cookies*
You sure you only have one fan? Look on the case. There's a grate-type
thing. I'm fairly sure it has a fan on.

P.S. Send this to 25 people or you have bad luck forever >:-)
Me: Front or back of the case? There's a big fan at the back. Can't see any others, though.
The Sheep: Yes. At the back.
>You realise I only have one fan.
1+1=2
i.e. processor fan + case fan = 2 fans
So, which one makes noise?
----
P.S. Send this to 25 people or you have bad luck forever >:-)
Me: Neither of them. The noise is coming from where the hard disks are. And coincides with when the HDD light flashes. I've set the comouter upright again, and the evil grinding that was driving me mad before seems to have stopped.
The Sheep: Oh. I see. Back up regularly. Seriously.
----
P.S. Send this to 25 people or you have bad luck forever >:-)
Me: Thanks for the panic-mongering ;)
I will, don't worry.
Not that you'd worry anyway, since you couldn't care less about my computer.
Thanks for your wisdom, oh guru.

PS Like the signature. Do you send that to everyone?
The Sheep: Yes
