Someone is looking out for me, I think :)

Last night Eni had a lovely hissy-fit when her floppy drive decided it didn't like Word any more, and the floppy disk decided to become corrupted and ultimately her beloved esssay ended up looking like

C R & ' - G n { (
)
¥ ¨ X ^ · Û ç - - h! t! g" s" Ñ" Ó" % % P& \& ä' ó' ±. ý û ý ý õ ý ý ó ý ý ý ý ý ý

s
So Eni thought, "OK, if at first you don't succeed..." and began again. But now Eni has dredged up an old backup copy she made sometime last week on her horribly unreliable (but apparently better than drive A) drive C, which is far from complete but close enough to give her something to work with.

Hooray!

Wish I'd seen this sooner: that's the header to one of the dozens of ~temp files generated by Word. Might even be the header to the document itself, though I'm inclined to doubt it. Nevertheless, Office 2002 and XP have a menu option 'File;Open;Recover text from any file' which is probably helpful... if the text is actually present in whatever got writen to disk.

Hmm...I did look in the temp folder, but there were zillions of ~tmp files in there, so I gave up pretty quickly (it was about midnight at the time!) Normally, it autorecovers when I get errors...

Alas, I do not have Office 2002 or XP (honestly, this is my computer we're talking about here!). I should stick to Lotus WordPro - the spellcheck is MUCH better for people with broken spacebars, and it has a nice reliable timesave option. And it's just...nice.
