Oooh, stuff!
10 November 2004 18:31My lovely Physiology supervisor of last year e-mailed a number of us (those of us who seemed terribly overenthusiastic, I suspect) to inform us that he was doing a lecture on his research today at 4. So I popped along (well, I wouldn't be a very good Dr Mason Fangirl if I didn't go to his research-based lectures, would I?) and got to see all the cool stuff he's been doing.
It seems that the bones in a frog's middle ear are rather interesting, and the previous theory that the whole thing worked like a piston is wrong. It actually works more like the lever on a plastic pinball game like the ones I had when I was about 10. Also, they have a weird muscle that joins part of their middle ear to their shoulder blade. This is thought to have something to do with making sure the middle ear bones don't plunge into the frog's cochlea every time it inhales. Oh, and the papers about it are here and here.
More histology today...I liked testing our blood groups last week better, really. But at least it needed no brain. Which was good, as mine departed shortly after the Pathology lecture finished. Girly's vet-friends were all ill, so she came to sit with us, which was nice, and proved that vets aren't really lazy in lectures, despite what she says. ;) Was nice to see her. Am in love with her gorgeous fluffy snuggly!coat.
Was very pleased to find that the Plants Supervisor is much nicer in supervisions than in real life, and what he said was nice and useful. So that's a relief and a good thing. And means I don't have to whine about him on LJ any more :) Oh, did I say that I am now official Plants student rep?! Well, I am. So,
