A guide to Eniland
1 January 2004 01:45It occurs to me that I tend to talk in Enispeak a lot, which tends to be a mixture of Cambridge jargon and plain nonsense. So I thought it might be worthwhile defining some of the more commonly used terms:
AIHL - All I Have Left. My Eluréd/Elurín fic.
ASNAC - Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. The subject my flatmate studies.
bourbon creams - A staple food for Enis. Small chocolate sandwich biscuits with chocolate cream between the two biscuit layers. Very cheap and very yummy.
CDB - Cell and Developmental Biology. Basically 'how do cells appear, and how do they work?'
Cells - See CDB. Also used to refer to the 1st Year Biology of Cells course, which leads naturally into 2nd Year CDB.
Chad's - St Chad's. The flat complexy thing where I live.
CICCU - Cambridge University InterCollegiate Christian Union. The (highly controversial) Christian Union at the University. Best known for their triennial Promise Week (which involves a LOT of people getting very angry at being 'harrassed' by CICCUites trying to convert them. Including Catholics) and their outspoken views on homosexuality. Not very popular with a lot of people. To be fair, CICCUites are indivually mostly very nice. Many are not obnoxious at all, in fact. But there are some who are Creationists, and some very strongly anti-gay.
CTS - Cambridge Tolkien Society.
CUSFS - Cambridge University Sci-Fi Society - also includes Jómsborg, the fantasy-loving bit of the society.
CUWoCS - Cambridge University Worshippers of Cthulhu Society. Otherwise known as the Cambridge University Worshippers of
fhtagn Society.
Dean - The chap who gets to yell at/fine me if I break college rules. The Dean at St Catharine's is also my supervisor...
DoS - Director of Studies. The person who is basically responsible for my college education. Who yells at me if I don't work hard enough. And is, unfortuantely, the Dean this year.
E/E - Eluréd/Elurín. Shorthand for AIHL
Fellow - Someone with a PhD who is associated with that particular college.
flibble - Generic expression of emotion. What emotion is being expressed depends on the tone. Flibble usually denotes positive emotions, especially bouncing, excitement or anticipation. Suitable for use as a greeting. It can also be used, more rarely, as an expression of annoyance.
Formal - Formal Hall. A strange event in which people come dressed up poshly and wearing college gowns. For around £4-6, they are fed a 3-4 course meal (BYOB, usually). Involves someone mumbling grace in Latin, and you're not supposed to leave the room once things have started, making bladders most irritable. Includes pennying. I hate them but Girly claims to love them.
Jaffa Cakes - A favourite treat of Enis everywhere. Spongy base, orange jelly in the middle and chocolate on top. Yes, I can consume a dozen of these in 5 minutes without even noticing it...
meep - Can be a greeting or a response to an embarrassing or mildly uncomfortable (in the mental or physical sense) situation.
nannette - The 1st Year I got assigned to look after during his early weeks. Very sweet but terribly innocent and in CICCU.
nanny - What a 2nd Year is to their 1st Year nannette.
Path - Pathology. The study of disease. I do NOT cut open dead bodies.
pennying - Silly Doxbridge tradition. Someone drops a penny in your drink. You then have to down it. The logic is something like, the penny has the Queen's head on, therefore dropping a penny into a glass is drowning the Queen. This is treason, so down it. Pennying desserts mean you have to eat them without cutlery (or is it with no hands? I think it's no hands, actually).
Plants - Plant Sciences, or more correctly, Plant and Microbial Sciences.
RP, RPG - Roleplaying (game). When each person chooses a character(s) to write, and then everyone lets them loose on each other, with occasionally bizarre consequences.
squee - Expression of intense delight/excitement.
stuffness - General good stuff; fun.
supervision - A pleasant (usually) hour involving 2-4 students and a supervisor, a college Fellow or sometimes a PhD student, in which the students go over the lecture and practical material with their supervisor, have the hard bits explained by One Who Knows, get set work and receive marked work back.
supervisor - The Fellow or PhD student who explains stuff about the course to you in supervisions.
TNS - The Noblest Sacrifice. A random Erestor/Ecthelion that I am supposed to be rewriting but keep neglecting.
tutor - A Fellow who is supposedly not in any way connected to my academic welfare and is instead concerned with my personal welfare. However, my normal tutor (an English type) is on Sabbatical this year, so ironically my Cells supervisor is also my tutor. This is OK though as she is nice.
unflibble - Whilst flibble can mean either good or bad vibes, unflibble is always negative - denotes anger or irritation.
