Bethnal Green
8 October 2006 14:55I just walked up to Bethnal Green. And DUDE! I think I'm in love. It has the coolest range of shops. Finally, a Woolworths! And lots of mini-supermarkets that sell weird frozen/salted/dried fish, random spices and stuff like rice flour. Plus lots of Asian fashion shops. I fell in love with a pink and black saree... If only I wasn't a broke student!
Spent too much money. Bought ground cinnamon, bulgar wheat, some weird beans in big pods. A large amount of googling suggests these are possibly some kind of lima beans. Reading about them suggests they're possibly full of cyanide, so I might play safe and massively overcook them. But they looked so cool I had to try! There were also these things that looked like a cross between asparagus and sugar cane, which may perhaps have been baby sugarcane shoots. I might try that next time!
The trouble with buying random stuff is you don't know if it's poisonous if you cook it the wrong way!
There are also useful things like Boots and Lloyds TSB, and the Tesco is really a lot bigger than I expected, so I picked up milk and dinner for tomorrow.
And the people are all so nice!!
Bethnal Green is just very, very cool.
