There are times when I haven't seen any current posts for certain friends and I become concerned as to their welfare. If I don't know their e-mail address, I have to hunt back for the last post that they made and leave a message trying to find out how they are doing. This nudge thing is supposedly intended to do that very thing and save me from having to scrouge up the most recent posting. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, for now, and see if it's any good, whenever the time comes that I need it, that is. As for disabling the feature, nah. Why bother? What harm can it do?

I guess some people's reasoning is that if they don't feel like updating for weeks or months - RL circumstances or just taking a break from fandom - they don't really want to be harrassed 50 e-mails bearing the polite LJ equivalent of, "OMG r u ok plz update soon!" I know some people already have fandom semi-stalkers, who e-mail them every month or so wanting to know when they are going to update their fics again already.

If I thought I wanted a break from LJ for that length of time, I probably would disable the feature just so that I could take a total break and not have to worry about returning to an inbox of nudges. OTOH, I'd probably warn people in advance if I was going offline anyway.

I admit there are one or two friends who update infrequently and I'd occasionally just like to know they are OK, but for the ones I am close to, I generally have some other contact details for them: an IM screen-name or an e-mail, or even a phone number.

When Fim and I were concerned about someone a while ago, between us we found email addies and mailed her. If that hadn't worked, I would have left a comment on her last post. It turned out she had been very busy for the last few months, thanked us for being concerned, and went back to her life. I don't see the need for this, and I think it could be abused, too. Not everyone wants to post every four days, and some people really do need four months to update a fic and shold be able to do so in peace.
Just my thoughts on this. I accept different circumstances might have different needs.

I think it's kind of wanky, but I had to try it out...so my Celegorm LJ nudged my Rumil LJ. LOL!! It works, but I don't really see the need for it.

1. I just read about it when I went to the front page to log in. I was like, WTF? It actually sounds less "silly" and more "obnoxious;" just another way for BNFs to get a kick out of how many people love them. I would never nudge anyone, because personally, I think it would be rude. So someone doesn't update for a week? Geez, who cares? I have friends who rarely ever update. I love them and I'd love to read more of whatever they want to write, but I know they have real lives and things to do in those lives. They have school and work. Unfortunately, life isn't all about LJ, and being constantly hassled to update just doesn't sound all that neat at all to me.

2. I chose number three, but actually I didn't know you could deactivate it before I read your poll (I only skimmed the front page before I logged in), so I'm off to do that right now.

Hmm, maybe that sounded a little too harsh. When I said "Geez, who cares?" I didn't mean I that I don't care whether my online friends are sick or hurt or whatever. Of course, when there's a big pause in their posting, I do get a little worried about them, especially if they're regular posters. But I wouldn't "nudge" them to find out if they were okay. I have most of their emails, so if I was that worried, I would send an email asking after their well-being.

Oh, thank you! :) I have only recently come to know the awesome that is Ioan in the past two years or so. Although I do actually like Horatio Hornblower for the plot, too! :D

That was my first thought too - what with the new schools feature and now the nudge I think LJ is getting twitchy about facebook poaching its terratory. Which is ridiculous, as you can't _do_ anything with facebook.

My general thought too - plus then I can say something personal like, "Hey sweetie - realised I hadn't seen you around for a while. Just wanted to check you were OK - hope the kids are doing well and that you're having fun!"

I'm hardly ever gone long enough to necessitate a nudge...and when I do need to go away for a while--like this past weekend--I post something first so that people don't worry. I'd be pretty annoyed to get nudged after specifically saying, "Hey, I'm having family issues, I need to bow out for a few days," especially if it was so someone could say "omg why haven't you psoted amc??" Actually, I don't think I have any friends who would do that, but given some of the stories I have heard from others, I can see how some people will be nudged into annoyance. :^/
