Woke up this morning feeling extremely cold, gritty and generally shitty, which was no good, but does mean that I'm all inkeeping with what seems to be a fashion movement going round Cambridge and also the Internet *hugs all the poor fashionable ill people* :(
Doped self up with paracetamol, and felt better after an hour or so...actually paid attention in Cells lecture (shock horror). This Cells lecturer does not impress me owing to his unfortuate inability to work a computer coupled despite having a fetish for fancy PowerPoints. His computer crashed last lecture, so he sort of had to ad-lib; not good. So he decided to make it up to us by repeating that lecture at 4pm today.
He got an audience of about 30 (probably a 10% turnout from the year!!) and it was basically a repeat of what he said before, only with diagrams. So I gave Eluréd/Elurín some attention instead, which they repaid by moving the plot on a bit for me, yay!
Plant Sciences practical was a little worrying. We had to shake these leaves up with test solution for 4 minutes, so to make sure we did it right, they waited until all the class were ready, then put on corny music while we shook these little bottles of test solution with all ball-bearings in, and the practical organiser danced up and down the lab looking like a complete cock. But it was extremely funny and amusing, so I don't mind really :) Our electrophoresis went direly wrong, but our protein tests (which are like pregnancy tests, only with tobacco leaves) went fine.
Oh, and I'm feeling much better now owing to the fact that the Melethryn Archive has added my fic...squee! *feels like real writer now*

Date: 18 Feb 2004 19:29 (UTC)I saw your name on the updates post on the mailing list this morning! I was like, "Hey, I know that person!" Congratulations! I'll be reading it as soon as I get some free time! :D

Date: 18 Feb 2004 19:41 (UTC)I know the feeling - there was a time when I had read every Glorfindel/Erestor in the Library of Moria. But lately there's just been no time, and keeping up with my favourite authors takes all of that :)

Date: 18 Feb 2004 20:31 (UTC)Haha yes the plant practical was pretty bizarre....why is it that all the plant sciences staff are barking mad?!
It's so weird to think that you are in all my practicals but as yet I haven't got a clue who you are!!
Re:
Date: 18 Feb 2004 21:10 (UTC)Aah, at the end of last term, cos I'm your Physiology rep!
I keep trying to grab you, but there's always people walking past, or the centrifuge has finished, or Matt *swoon* is debriefing us on nerves, muscles, etc. (Matt is my supervisor so I sometimes kind of flirt with him...)

Date: 19 Feb 2004 17:05 (UTC)If that was the only thing first years had to judge Plant Sciences on, it's small wonder no-one used to want to do it! But there's actually a lot of good Plant Sciences going on - and I guess you need that level of charisma (insanity?) to convince people that once you've got the hang of photosynthesis, there's some much more interesting stuff still to come.
I still haven't decided what I want to do next year - there are about five subjects which appeal; I don't want to have to pick just three! :(

Date: 19 Feb 2004 17:41 (UTC)i was about to go for plants, biochem, molecular cell bio, but my dos (dr keith johnstone, one of the barking mad people in yesterday's lab) said that there's no point doing both biochem and mcb because they overlap so much, so i've started thinking about animal bio or ecology...
it's a though call.

Date: 19 Feb 2004 18:08 (UTC)My college nanny does Ecology (he switched from HPS after they set him 2 essays!)...and now he has to do a 1200 (or was it 12000?) word dissertation!
Keith's your DoS? Wow! That must be cool! (But then, Matt's mine, and he's awesome).

Date: 19 Feb 2004 19:56 (UTC)honestly, i don't like matt that much, he's ok in explaining stuff, but i don't like his attitude. he told me that i should go out less, without knowing how little how i actually have been going. and i hear he expects quite a lot from his supervisees.
