So, after my 10am lecture on Saturday, I finished packing my bag and trotted over to Oxford. Coach going there was evil - every time the driver shifted from neutral into drive or something like that, the bus shuddered the way it does when someone slams one of the boot compartments closed hard. So lots of annoying random jolts, and the sun on my head.
Still, got into Oxford at the expected time, and went about being a tourist. Bought self some Maya Gold. Yum yum! Wandered past Worcester College, St Catharine's sister college, hoping it would be open and would let me visit, but it was closed to visitors and I wasn't in the mood to do the cute act to wangle my way in. Headed up Walton Road, then along Observatory Street, then down past the hospital - thus learning where Somerville College was, which amusingly it later turned out half of the Taruithorn bunch did not know!
Looked for a Caffé Nero as was getting chilly - took a bit of wandering before I located one, but then settled down nicely with a chai latte. Which was lovely. Stayed there quite a while, until people who wanted my table started to give me evils.
After some more wandering and text messaging and things, I headed off to the venue. Got there all by myself without a hiccup (yay!) and changed into Dress whilst chatting to some of the Oxonians, who seemed really lovely. The banquet was fantastic. The food was scrummy-delicious, the wine was good, the people were fantastic.
beckyc may wish to note that after mingling with 4 whip-wielding Balrogs and two dragons wearing rather fetching slave collars, it is probably inaccurate to assume that all of Taruithorn are sweet and innocent darlings. Even more so when the lyrics to some of the singalong filks went something like, "Make them star in bad slash-porn fics!" The entertainment was fun, with the story of Húrin and nifty lighting effects.
There was ceilidhy type dancing, which was lots of fun and luckily nothing so strenuous that my dress needed tucking into my knickers to provide sufficient leg movement. I liked Kick Kick Woo cos it was bouncy and silly. And the gender distribution was good enough to permit gender-specific dancing with parts for ladies and gents.
The range of desserts looked delicious, but by that time I was much much too full to contemplate tasting more than a tiny bit of chocolate fudge and some ball thing that was rather tasty... The dragon was good. When I see a picture of the dragon, I will link you to it!
I was very happy, and the people are so adorable. And the costumes were AMAZING! There was dashing!handsome!Barahir, and Balrog with fluffy slippers, and Balrog in gorgeous corset, and dark Galadriel also in gorgeous corset. And werewolves and Carcharoth (aka
prince_eldarion - sooooooo cute!!!!!). Oh, and
jane_somebody remembered me from
beckyc's bad taste party about 1-2 years ago! *impressed*
Then there was a post-party thing in Somerville MCR, in which Mornington Crescent was played, and tardigrades were discussed (HOORAY for Biologists managing to dominate a geek conversation despite being outnumbered by Mathmos!). I fell asleep on the chair, and people seemed to decide soon after that it was time to go to bed. Which makes sense, as it was nearly 4am by then.
Finally got to bed about 4:30am, on Barahir's very comfy sofa. Slept like a log!
Got up at 9:30am and sort of slobbed about till 11 talking about sci-fi, fantasy, geekery and Babylon 5. Then decided I needed to get a bus already. I was about 10 feet from the bus when it pulled away. The next one was in an hour. But since tardigrade!Matthew was walking back into Oxford from Littlemore anyway (about 3 miles), I decided I would come too - and ended up in Oxford 15 minutes earlier than I would have been if I'd waited for the next bus, as a result. Which gave me time to buy coffee and cookie before heading home.
This was a goood plan, as the coach ride home removed all my appetite for something close to 8 hours afterwards. Evil coach. Was very glad to be back in Cambridge. Napped a bit on the coach, mostly so I didn't have to acknowledge the world. But because of the general activity and sleep deprivation, I was still really tired and useless for the rest of Sunday.
I hope my zombified state didn't show too much at Lindir's party!!
