When on'e parents start phoning to check one is still alive, it becomes apparent that one is not updating LJ enough. So... stuff.
Pancakes are yummy. I dragged along
innocencest for the occasion, and the wonderful
beckyc brought some ice cream for me (Yay her!!), and so my pancakes were a delicious concoction of ice cream, chocolate buttons, smarties, golden syrup and melted Galaxy chocolate spread. Yay calories. Were soooooo nice it was untrue. Discussion migrated over many subjects and was cool, and I got all nostalgic as I saw Phyllis Eisenstein books in the geek library on the stairs, and was happy.
We won, but it was close - Oxford have realms of Tolkien knowledge and are very clever! And by "we" I mostly mean Matthew W, who does appear to know everything. Was muchly impressed, though not much help with questions - though I did squee when I knew the answer to who trained Fëanor, and what Ú means at the start of an Elvish word, and squeed more when a question about Galion came up.
Oh, a quick poke at the Taruithorn friends list reveals that the quiz questions may be found here in Russian!
beckyc showed us St Hilda's, which is very pretty and nice, and I recognised where we were from when I was in Oxford the other week for banqueting purposes. Becky pointed out a student to us in an exam gown, and told us what all the bits meant (like the carnation). And we went to a sweet things shop where there were sweet things of much wonderfulness. Like brownies. Mmmmm.
Trains were a nightmare. The ticket machine in Cam took my card, authorised the transaction and then crashed after returning my card but before giving me a ticket. I whined at them a bit on Monday and they assure me a failsafe is built into the machine so that when this happens my card doesn't get charged. So I'll see how it goes. As a result of the ticket faff, I had the fun of buying lots of separate tickets all the way to Oxford and back. But trains are fun. Even the one that sat for an hour between Slough and Paddington and couldn't get into Paddington cos of a points failure, so had to reverse up the track a mile or so back to Slough to change to the Heathrow Express line.
I loved the masquerade, I agree with all
larian's guesses as they make goodly sense. I was very amused:
blue_blue was playing Haldir from Unspoken, I was playing Gildor, and they ended up coupling up, which is pefect as they are an established major couple in the fics too! YAY!
I want to know what fics all the charries are from now!
Yay yay yay! :D :D
There was a debate at CTS on Tuesday: "This house believes that the Peter Jackson movies were a travesty and should never have been made." I found myself leading the "Against" (i.e. pro-movie) team, which was fun. It went rather well, and there were surprise appearances from
aelfgifu and
_idealism, who are both absolutely lovely and I would love to see again.
Our side lost, but aaah well.
Luckily the butterfly chose to behave for the meeting and stayed out of the way, politely sitting under my desk the whole time and not doing anything nutty.
I let the butterfly go yesterday morning - not really liking the idea of waking up one morning and finding I'd squashed it or swallowed it or something in my sleep, I put it in a lemonade bottle for the night with some more honey/water. Unfortunately butterflies are not very good at the idea of transparency and so it got a bit panicky and lost some wing scales during the night. Since it seemed much livelier than when I found it, and had been fed on lots of German honey, I let it go. Hopefully it will find some nettles and make baby butterflies now.
Also had an amusing light fitting failure - what I thought was a blown bulb was a dead light fitting (which demonstrates that I still can't work my multimeter, as I was unable to use it to establish if the bulb was kaput or not). So a lovely friendly and nice electrician came in to visit me and replaced my old nasty light fitting with a shiny new one higher up, so now my room is lit by 100W goodness.
Gave a presentation yesterday that went pretty well in general. But did get some constructive criticism from the lecturer which was fair and justified and definitely valuable, but since I'm currently a little more sensitive than usual perhaps maybe it sort of jolted my mood yesterday, especially as I then had a supervision where my Trends essay got nicely torn apart - which again, was useful and justified and so on, but there's only so much critique one can take before starting to feel generally negative towards one's own work! Anyway, the upside of this was that the lecturer e-mailed me today to congratulate me on taking the criticism with such good grace and said she was very impressed, so that was reassuring anyway!
Went for a 30 minute nap this evening and woke 2 hours later. Hee!
Oooh, and My mum is visiting at the weekend!!!!!!! This makes me happy and squeeful and stuff. She's also bringing me a new puter that my brother has installed all my favourite programs on. :D :D *is happy*
