Argh my eyes! My brain! Argh!

In the Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit and ROTK, ladies and gentlement, THIS is King Thranduil of Mirkwood.

All I can say is poor, poor Legolas...

Yeah, they got 'elf', 'dwarf', and 'goblin' mixed up.

The Hobbit was the scariest movie EVER to me when I was little. They showed it to us in school a lot and Gollum scared the SHIT out of me. Have you seen it? He is scary as hell. Oh my god. I hated that movie so much.

I'm wondering if Andy Serkis actually may have based his Gollum voice a bit on the one from that cartoon... the way they say "My precious" is scarily similar sometimes.

I rented it again a few years ago to see what scared me so much when I was little. This was after at least one of the LOTR movies had come out, so Elrond made me LOL and Thranduil made me WTF. They were both so weird.

I've seen the Rankin/Bass ROTK, which has a lot of Gollum clips in as well. It's like...OMG giant green frog monster! I have yet to see the Hobbit. But I'm sure it will be inflicted on me at some point!

Thinking back, the Gollum in the BBC Radio play sounded rather similar as well...

Did they even READ how Tolkien described the elves? Good grief.

(snorts) Oh, God, I know. My Thranduil muse cried when he saw it. It took us days to get him to come out of his room.

But even with that truly horrid choice of character design, the Rankin/Bass cartoons are far superior to the Ralph Bakshi FotR cartoon. That thing is just... Ugh!!! Brain-explodingly terrible.

"The Hobbit" cartoon is the best of the lot. The only bone of contention I have with it is the character designs for the Wood-Elves and Elrond; otherwise it's cute.

LOL! I actually think the Bakshi was marginally less horrendous - though Boromir in hot pants and a Viking helmet... *squeaks and hides* I'll stick to the eye candy Peter Jackson cast in some of his roles, I think!
