*scream* The internet is full of reviews that happily talk about how bacteria, yeast and any other critter under the sun cope with heat damage to their cells, but no one in the known universe seems to have bothered to mention in any article in the last 20 years what damage heat does to the cells! (I want a reference for my essay - don't worry, world, I do actually know why!)

Am doing work. I feel all industrious.

Need to pose for silly NatSci photo at 7pm. Watch me burst with enthusiasm. I want a yearbook to remember everyone else - the idea of having to contribute something for people to remember me is sort of beyond my comprehension...

I don't know if you can access this article (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_aset=V-WA-A-W-BW-MsSWYVW-UUA-U-AAVCUBEYBU-AAVWZWUZBU-DWDDWEUDB-BW-U&_rdoc=27&_fmt=summary&_udi=B6X4F-46MJ0YB-22&_coverDate=12%2F31%2F1987&_cdi=7325&_orig=search&_st=13&_sort=d&view=c&_acct=C000011279&_version=1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=4060284&md5=907e24609cb11fc82d485e02f8f01340)?

(I'm so crap at doing my own work now that I'm taking to doing everyone else's instead by the looks of things! <grin>)

Thank you - I can, and it's citable! *huggles happily*

Now, I realise my GCSE biology may be a little basic for you, but I've been under the impression heat caused the enzymes in a cell to 'denature' and stop functioning. That seems a far bit like damage to me ;)

*nods* As I said in the post, I know this, but I can't go asserting it in my essay unless I have some way to back this assertion up with a published reference. (Also, a reference stating the exact reason for the denaturation tends to be useful here.)

Don't they allow you to mention common knowledge without citations?

Yeah, but the reasons why proteins denature are not really common knowledge, stuff like the hydrophobic interactions and ionic bonds changing in strength.

*sick of this essay*

Does every single point you make have to have a reference?
... Does every single article you take a reference from have to have a reference? ;)

When it comes to writing essays I generally the information I absorbed beforehand as my own knowledge, and only provide references to texts I took information from during the actual writing process.

Well, any point that can be disputed needs referencing. In general, if it's something that was proven and reproven experimentally 20 years ago, you can get away with referencing a review article that mentions a couple of those experiments. If it's something someone proved more recently, you need to reference the paper where they write up the experiment. If it's something that is common knowledge, or your own speculation, you can get away with just saying it.

Does silly describe the NatSci or the photo?

Mostly the photo! Everyone else was in black tie for a posh dinner, and then there was me, in Eni clothes! Muchly silly!

Sounds fairly silly. I can't work out which is sillier- those in Eni clothes or those in black tie. I will tend to think the latter sillier or at least fair game for the Red Corps.
