This board, and most especially, this thread has made my day of notetaking on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii copper homeostasis a hundred times more bearable (and probably four times less productive, but never mind). Tales from the Emercency Department - priceless. Not recommended if you are sensitive and might be offended/upset/triggered by the sort of morbid gallows humour prevalent among medical students. Highly recommended if you find that sort of stuff funny.

I think I left my coffee filters up North. Trying to use a sheet of A4 paper folded into a filter funnel doesn't work as well. 1. The coffee doesn't drain through, and the paper sort of closes up so no more is coming out into the cup at all after a while; 2. When you give it a gentle tug to try and loosen it, the now-soggy paper tears. End result: weak coffee with grains in.

Well, you live and learn...

*giggle* Even doctors and residents and such need to learn to write in complete sentences, or maybe some dude will get them! Those were funny!

Oh this is good! A good laugh... since Atleast three of the posts were from Philadelphia... and although I was not a doctor, I was a teacher in north Philly, I ran into cases like this in my class!

Dark humor yes, but sometimes the only way to get through real life....

LOL, those were good... and odd. Some people are rather odd, hehe!

Thank you for sharing. Apparently find stuff like that funny! :D

"#6 Never, ever leave flashlights, shampoo bottles, beer bottles or any long, circular object on the floor because someday you will fall on it and it will somehow, work its way up your rectum."

LOL. Love it!!

Hee. Thanks for the laugh. :) Also, we use ordinary kitchen roll as coffee filters. Works great.

ought to note that we use the very cheapest kitchen roll because it's an instance where you DON'T want "super-absorbency".

A4 writing paper is lacquered* to make it feel nice to the touch, which has the side effect of making it somewhat water resistant. Consequently, it is naturally suboptimal as filter paper. As I see it, you have various options:

1) Nick some filter paper from a lab somewhere.
2) Actually get some filters.
3) Stop drinking ground coffee
4) Kitchen roll and similiar are likely to work. You could experiment with various different paper type things. Or perhaps not.

*This is probably the wrong term for the process. Sue me.

I suspect option #2 will be the medium-term solution, and #4 the short-term one.

I had been a little suspicious of writing paper, yes - so I did think as far as using less-bleached lined paper as opposed to bright white copier paper, but the logic sort of stopped there!

If you do try a series of different types of paper, do keep us updated...

I think the other thing about writing paper compared to the other sorts is that it is much denser, ie less porous.

I'm now curious as to the filtration properties of my semi-posh letter writing paper stuff. Curse you.

I didn't understand the spiffy medical terms but the general stories are fun!

  • Kitchen roll works as a coffee filter, especially if you split out one layer of the 2-Ply sheets.
  • Bogroll (unused) in a tea-strainer works well if you're very patient about pouring slowly and carefully.
  • Spare pocket-repair liners work well for flavour but let some grounds through.
  • Socks don't work at all.
  • Boiling up filter-ground coffee and water and hoping the brew will settle doesn't work at all.
  • Abstinence from coffee doesn't work at all. However, applying sarcasm and large blunt pieces of wood to people who suggest this course of action has a remarkably soothing effect.
