Yay!

(People who deserve PhDs this year who have got them) ++;

I can't quite get my mind around the concept of Eni in London. Then again I can't really manage this with [livejournal.com profile] edith_the_hutt either and he's been there for nearly two years now.

Well done anyway.

Hey, congrats! BEES! XD

Your system confuses me so much, though. I can't believe you're going for a PhD now. That's like woah. Over here PhD students are usually a lot older than us, 'cause you have to get through grad school first and that's like another two-four years or something.

You're going to be a Doctor of Beeeeees!

... And I really just like saying beeeeeeeeeees!

From: [identity profile] enismirdal.livejournal.com
What sort of degree/diploma/title do you get at the end of grad school? A Master's?

That's scary...I think financially that would be really hard over here, considering student debt after just an undergraduate degree, unless a UK grad school equivalent offered BIG grants to students... PhDs luckily tend to have funding of an average of £12,000 a year, I believe, so you can get by.

Date: 13 May 2006 03:41 (UTC)
From: [identity profile] melime.livejournal.com
Yeah, one goes to grad school to get a Masters. Only then can you become a PhD student. I'd love to be Dr. Amanda, but I don't think I can handle six or so more years of school! Bleh! (Also, writing a thesis is scary!)

Eee, that's sooo cool that you're going to be a PhD student! I'm so excited for you! Dr. Eni of BEES!

May I ask (in laymans terms) what the bee project is about?

Date: 13 May 2006 08:13 (UTC)
From: [identity profile] enismirdal.livejournal.com
It's a sort of "flowers through a bee's eyes" sort of thing - there's a database of colour/reflectance data for flowers all over the world, and my job will basically be to do something with it. So on the one hand I'll be looking for trends in the data, for example how colours of flowers change in different environements, and on the other hand playing with bees to see what they think of different colours under different conditions.

No, it was after 9 but before 10; LJ simply hasn't noticed we're on British summer time not UCT/GMT at the moment. Hehehe.

That makes sense. I also have to say that I am impressed with how quickly QMUL responded considering how badly organised other London Colleges are...

Well, it's been unofficial communication with the supervisor so far. So since it's all personal e-mailing back and forth it's not as bad.

(Does that mean you already have a Master degree? That was quick! Masters usually take 4 years - and PhD comes after that. You must have started early!)

No - in the UK they accept you on to most PhD courses with only a Bachelor's degree. The only time it's worth doing a Master's before a PhD is a) if you're not sure you want to go into research and need a "taster year" to think about it or b) if your grades were too low on your Bachelor's degree to be accepted on to a PhD project.

It's funny, actually - I hear German universities will take English PhD students who don't have a Master's, yet if they recruit a German student for exactly the same position, they will need to have a Master's! (Which sort of sucks for my German friend, who studied here in the UK and is getting a UK degree, but fancied returning to Germany for her PhD.)

I'm not sure I was terribly terribly clear about it in my entries anyway, so no worries! It's a PhD place in London to do beeeeeeeees. Got an e-mail on Friday to tell me that he's going to offer me the position. :D :D
