I have new RAM for my computer. It's a DIMM I think.

Question: if I follow the instructions on the leaflet that came with it exactly and don't try to be clever, do I stand a reasonable chance of installing it successfully without blowing up my computer? Or should I bribe someone geekier than me to install the memory for me?

ETA: It works!! It works!! Tripling the memory of one's computer is a Good Thing! *admires computer now not taking 5 minutes to boot, etc.*

I've sucessfully installed RAM several times and I'm an idiot. So yeah, I reckon you'll be ok. Just remember to touch a radiator (to ground yourself) and make sure you've got it in the right way around and that all the connectors line up.

Oh, and try not to sneeze on the insides of your computer. I've found that that's rarely a good thing.

I always worry that I'm pushing too hard, but I've not broken anything yet inserting memory. Inspecting the DIMM and the slot ought to make it reasonably clear whether you're putting it in the right way around or not.

I think it's rather straightforward; a lot of computers are even colour-coded these days and it's quite obvious which slot you need and what way round DIMMs go in (if it's the wrong way it just won't click into place :P). And take edith_the_hutt's advice and ground yourself in case you get a nasty shock. Oh, and remember which screws go where in the case; when we opened up a PC in one of my practicals we forgot, and inexplicably ended up with extra screws left over and a slightly wonky case. o.O

...but don't worry about *you* getting a static shock, worry about what damage that shock will do to the computer!

Heh, I only express concern at Eni getting hurt by nasty puter static because I got hurt by a puter in my practical. Although that was due to my over-enthusiastic removal of a network card, but I like to think that was when I was first 'blooded' as a geek. ;)

If my PC got damaged it'd probably be a blessing, mind you, it being a bulky Celeron beast. I could then get a *decent* PC that doesn't take half an hour to load Dreamweaver. :P

I often find it advisable to find a torch or directable lamp for peering inside computer cases with before attempting such things, but otherwise you should be fine :).
