Busy couple of days!
17 June 2006 21:34Yesterday, my parents came to visit! Unfortunately, the traffic was horrendous and the journey took them nearly 5 hours (including break for lunch). So they weren't here until a while after 5, which was too late for us to go to the concert in Main Court. But we managed a little bit of wandering in Cambridge, and there was dinner.
Thank you to all the people who suggested restaurants. In the end, we went to The Vaults, which was lovely (except for a minor problem with the Port that was quickly rectified). Lots of yummy yummy food! Pigeon breast = delicious.
Then we wandered some more and bumped into
ilanin, which was cool, and went out for coffee, at which point
edith_the_hutt and
rochvelleth walked past and I ran up the street to say hi and impart hugs. Yay them!
Got home, went to bed after watching some DVD and things. Slept very little - body's temperature controls seemed to have gone on holiday, so I kept being too hot, I was accidentally grinding my teeth, my brain was on overdrive and I had Home in the Heartland as an earworm for about 3 hours.
Today, I got up VERY early (8am) to meet parents for breakfast. Waitress in Don Pasquale told us initially they did serve a continental breakfast, then when we sat down and attempted to order one, she got very confused and pointed at the Full English, so we attempted to explain the difference, established that they don't do a continental breakfast, and went to Nero's.
Then there was shopping. I needed a pair of presentable black shoes for graduation. These were acquired reasonably quickly and look rather nice. Good going! I dumped them in my room, dad took photos of Catz, and then we went to the Fitz. Our tour of the Fitz was rather brief - mum and I admired some of the still life pictures from the Renaissance-y era, with big pink roses and butterflies, and 17th century ladies in dresses painted so crisply you could almost touch the silk. We also looked at some cool Egyptian mummified randomstuff, like a falcon and a cat.
Parents checked out, mum and I went for a short walk while dad read the paper. Then they both went off to a garden party at Catz and ate asparagus wrapped in ham, using sporks, which sounded tricky. They lost interest after an hour and found me again, walking in as I was watching the extras on my DVD. So then dad declared he wanted to watch the Bumps. This went slightly wrong as I hadn't realised they have the Bumps about a million bleeping miles away, and was so busy ogling at how far away they are that I messed up the navigation. We got there eventually, I got an ice cream, and mum and I stood around while dad ran up and down being squeeful and nostalgic.
Mum and I concluded that boaties are completely mad. Funny really - there's a half hour build-up to each race, and then it's over so fast. Not sure how Catz did as we were at the start not the finish. We saw a pike eating little fish, and a pretty dragonfly.
Then parents headed home, dropping me at Selwyn en route for the LBGT garden party. Which was very nice, even though I only knew a few people. As ever, saw some people I knew but didn't realise were gay. And lots of other people, including someone I met via
fhtagn at the beer festival, who made me squee then and made me squee again today as she was cool. Also caught up with Girly (YAY GIRLY!) who seemed great. And ate lots of food and drank some wine.
As that was coming to a close, I vanished off, went home, and have spent about half the time since then asleep. I've caught the sun just a bit (arms are still white - had SPF 35 on arms - but my foundation is only SPF 12 and let some sun through. And my parting is pink) but I think the sleepiness is from busy day things and too little sleep, as a good nap seems to have helped.
Will do dinner things soonish. Perhaps have coffee before then.
My parents are the coolest people.

Date: 19 Jun 2006 11:22 (UTC)You might think this is a random post, but Luin77 is one of my friends and she told me that we actually live near each other (Cambridge) and that it might be an idea to join the LJ picnics. Anyway, I'd be quite excited to do something like this, make more friends and pleased to meet up with other LJers who are also friends of the lovely Luin77! So please introduce yourself! :)

Date: 19 Jun 2006 11:38 (UTC)Of course, I'm running off to London as of next year, but there are so many reasons to pop back to Cambridge now and again that I'll probably be seen around Cambridge a lot anyway!
Hi, and it's lovely to meet you! Please may I add you on LJ? :)
