Oooh, for I have been to the Other Place and come back alive! We did the Varsity Quiz against the Oxford Tolkien Society.
And we won, 40 points to 37. Yay!
It was a good honourable battle, and despite their unfortunate disability (i.e. going to Oxford) they are a nice, cheerful group of folks. They all have fun accents, and are a bit mad like us, so it's good. I got to be on the team (ooh squee) - I seemed to be the only one who really wanted to be, oddly enough. I acquitted myself, I hope, not unreasonably, for someone who knew nothing of the Lord of the Rings before the first movie came out, coming out with one or two random strokes of near-inspiration (*cynical snork*).
But methinks the real heroes were the others, who seemed to know lots and lots about stuff which made me look blank.
It was all jolly good fun and good-natured, and we got to see Oxford, which is HUUUUUUGE and has real streets with real cars that drive fast! It was almost like a normal city, unlike Cambridge, which feels more like a weird dream at times.
The coach going there/back (3 hours each way - ugh!) couldn't decide whether to be incredibly hot or cold, which was less fun. However, I went through the notes from the 2 lectures I missed in order to do this (naughty Eni!) and my practical notes, and wrote more Eluréd/Elurín, who are really growing on me, I must say. Also met
foreverdirt, who is cool and nice and told me the name of a new slash author to read - squee!
Conclusion: Good day!

Date: 29 Feb 2004 03:01 (UTC)Can't wait to read your Eluréd/Elurín... they've always intrigued me. It's awfully sad about what happened to them; being exposed in the wilderness has got to suck. But you'd think that being Elves, they would have survived somehow. Now, if I was a fanfic author myself, I would totally write an alternate ending. :D *is inspired but doesn't know what to do with it!*

Date: 29 Feb 2004 09:56 (UTC)And yes, it's an alternate ending. All Tolkien actually said was "they were left in the woods to starve" and "no-one knows what happened to them" (although probably not in those words). So it's not hard to imagine them finding some way to survive :)
