1. One Tuesday night, I was looking for white rice (parents had lots of brown/basmati - I wanted boring easycook because I wanted to make my dinner in 10 minutes not 25) and came across snowflakes/flaked rice. The packaging looked a little dated so I peered at the Best Before Date.

June 1996.

I'm attempting to get photo evidence but it's hard to get the light right to show the stamp.

In any case, I'm a student. So I made snowflake pudding from this 10 year old ingredient (it looked fine, no dark/crawling bits) and ate it. And jolly nice it was too.

2. My brother walked into the living room in his boxer shorts today. He has almost-a-six pack.

I am scared. Wie die Zeit vergeht!

My dad has extracts in the pantry that expired in the 70s. And he uses them. O.o

Whoah! Scary... But I guess if they still taste OK...

Yeah, and if they were going to kill us I suppose it would have happened circa 1980. :-P

Where did Time go?

I remember the total horror at 11 of discovering that my friends thought my two older brothers were fanciable......still couldn't see it myself (but certainly thought all their friends were.....).

I think it's a brother and sister thing that suddenly things take you by surprise.

I was scared by a friend's younger brother being, well, a young man now, and not a little boy...
I've visited here enough to add you now, if that's okay?

It's scary the way kids can stop being kids...my brother went from shorter than me to taller than me while I was at uni, and it was so freaky!

Yeah, sure! Add away - I'll add you back. Waaaah that I'm not at Cambridge any more...yay you for being an ex-Cambridge plantsci type (if your info is anything to go off!). Also...OMG you actually ate frogspawn? Suddenly eating 10 year old flaked rice in a pudding seems not at all radical.

:) What are you up to now you've left? Yay for ex-cam plantscis!
And, yes. I was living with some adventurous housemates at the time...

I'm off to do a PhD at Queen Mary, University of London. Working with one of the researchers who collaborated on my Part II project, so it's worked out nicely. What are you up to? (I take it from your year of leaving being 2002 that you're from the year before me.)

Oh cool, what's it on?
I'm working as a teaching assistant (lol, this will become apparent once term starts again and I'm back at work...).

1. You are brave! I have an irrational fear of old food stuff, although I do know it is silly when it comes to rice and such.

2. Oh, I know! I don't have younger siblings, but I find it scary enough to find out that younger siblings of my friends now marry/get babies/buy houses etc. I mean... wasn't it just yesterday that they annoyed us by trying to sneak into the room?! :D

I first read "white mice" ... it's even more scarry that way around

My sister and I used to snicker over a bottle of lemon extract in my parents' pantry from...1976!

Guess they don't like lemon much!

Friended the three LJs. I don't mind fooling around with the characters themselves, or talking about the characters. I also friended the three LJs with caranthir's LJ. :)

Right now we have another scandal of meat way beyond the Best Before Date in Germany. I think rice is harmless compared to that.

'Wie die Zeit vergeht!' That's perfect german. And yes it's somehow scary.

*grins* It was a set phrase my German teacher taught me at school, I think. My grammar is dreadful when I have to make things up from scratch!

And eek with the meat! I hope no-one got food poisoning!

hehe...Last month I was helping my mom get some things done around her place and somehow got roped into cleaning out her fridge. When I glanced at the date on the box of baking soda, I realized that it was May 1992. It's beyond me how anyone can have the same box of baking soda in the fridge for 14 years.

Glad your pudding turned out well, though!

Wow! That's got to be a record...but I guess baking soda won't really go off - fortunately! Although I guess that means your mum isn't a massively keen baker? Heheh!

Nice to see you around again. I was actually thinking of you earlier and wondering how you were getting on. *hugs*
