OK, so I have to learn Java/JSP and SQL. I'm going to turn into
uisgebeatha or something! *grins* Not that this is in any way objectionable. But I'm working in a lab full of Biologists who can't code for toffee, so I'm having to teach myself with no-one I can call when I get stuck, meaning my initiative is getting some testing!
Life has a habit of chucking me in at the deep end sometimes. Funnily enough, I generally seem to thrive on it.
Being a 1st year PhD, I can split my time between reading papers (= very useful background) and the code side of things (= also very useful) so all in all I don't get too brain-numbed. I can also attempt to clean my supervisor's computer keyboard, which is possibly even dirtier than the one on my Dell 1150 got. (So far, the new puter's one is reasonably clean.)
Really I want to do some serious messing around with some of the .jsps, so I'm moving all the main files to my lappie where I can completely destroy them if I mess up, without damaging the master database on supervisor's computer.
In other news, I am chain-sucking Tunes and bought myself lots of chocolate. This makes for good cold medicine. I will turn to Real Painkillers if it becomes less of a bah thing and more of an eurgh thing. :)

Date: 26 Sep 2006 18:32 (UTC)^_^ Well we can help each other with the JSP, which I'm currently teaching myself. If you get stuck on Java I can point you at a few things, and I'm on Messenger, GoogleTalk and Pandion most of the day. (I did have YIM on here but not anymore)

Ahh, you have the makings of a sensible geekEni. Good luck, and drop me a line if you need a hand! :)

Date: 26 Sep 2006 21:20 (UTC)The project outline is something along the lines of, "Build up an open-access database of floral colour, and use the database to solve questions about how flowers appear through a bee's eyes." So the first step is to get this here database working. After that, I can go on and do real Biology!
