27 September 2006 21:18Still a compsci. Not getting terribly far, but today my SQL was good enough to get me into the database "Users" so I could get a username and password provided by my predecessor that allowed me to log into the front-end to test out the front-end of the database. And found lots of bits that don't work.
Java compiler hates me and keeps telling me the "main" class isn't defined. Bah.
Am wasting time cleaning supervisor's keyboard. It's sort of a bit dirty, but getting better.
Also still reading papers, reading LOTS of Java tutorials, JSP tutorials, SQL tutorials.
I'm staying at
tuxedo_elf's Friday and Saturday night now! SQUEEEEEEEEE!
Even though Nina's Heavenly Delights is, in fact, not on at her local cinema, I found out it's showing at Cineworld in Cambridge on the 13th October! So I might try a plan: book half day off work, go to Cambridge, swan around until movie time, go watch movie, crash somewhere, swan around more on the Saturday, go home whenever.
Last night I went out with QM LGBT. It's weird. In Cambridge I seemed to hang out with a crowd where it was assumed you were polybi unless otherwise stated. So I guess I sort of almost came out in some way. In any case, there was one friendly face, a guy from a nearby flat who comes over to ours lots for cookies and cards. And I met a girl who reads slash! I asked if she'd ever come across
foreverdirt, as her main fandom is Due South slash, she said she wasn't sure. I'll have to ask her about that Cesperanza person...*seems to remember that was goodfic!* It was pretty relaxing, though, being around people you know aren't judging you at all, no pretences.
I'm using wine to cure cold. Don't worry, I'm not actually "ill".
keiliss - I'm nearly done with Doubt, really. I'm going to attack it after dinner; the last bit is so heartbreatking! I really just haven't had an evening free since I got back from Manchester until now! *lol*

Date: 27 Sep 2006 22:07 (UTC)WRT the Java error, it's probably trying to tell you you don't have a 'main' bit. Java programs need 'main' magic to run. So at some point you need the magical incantation *waves wand* public static void main (String [] args). So if you're starting off doing the Hello World program, it should look something like:
public class Hello{
public static void main (String [] args){
System.out.println ("Hello World!");
}
}
Hope that helps. ^_^ Hot damn I need to get back into programming...

Date: 28 Sep 2006 21:25 (UTC)I'm trying a different compiler instead.
I have a feeling I'm lacking a driver I need, but I'm not sure. Of course, I spend all day trying to get some response from any Sun Java application, and then this evening it loads itself up automatically for a website I wasn't even interested in... *gives up*
On the plus side, today I fixed the registration process for our database, so now new people can register to view it.
And it no longer confirms their registration by flashing up all the details of what was added to the users database and where... *considers it imprudent to display their new password in normal sized letters on the screen when they just joined*

Date: 28 Sep 2006 21:20 (UTC)And don't worry about it - I gave up with "Windows Live Messenger". I blame that for the sudden stack of spyware that appeared on my computer, and even though I did get it working with Uli's Yahoo, it lost half our messages. I kept getting her IMs as e-mails into my hotmail account! O_o
*hugs back*
