Hehe! I've never tried LJ's rich text mode, but I tend not to like anything that tries to be cleverer than me. It's the same reason I haven't ever tried to use Dreamweaver for web design.
The thing about Dreamweaver is, though, that it has an "edit HTML source" window, so you can make changes there and see the results immediately in the main page view window; you can create and work with the HTML/plain text without having to actually type it all yourself in the first place, and you get things like umpteen undo's. It's quite like Semagic in a way, I suppose. Another thing I like about it is that it automates updating all your links in all your webpages if you're making a website and keep moving things around within different subdirectories - it's spared me many a major Fing & Change job.
I use Semagic on my home computer, and plain text mode if I update from my work. I've never actually tried the rich text mode - I'm just too used to seeing and typing in the HTML codes to want to change now.
I'm not sure what mode this is (because I'm not that computer savvy) but I press this here button (http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml) and type away.
A lot of my entries are written at work, but since I don't have LJ access there, I write them in WordPad and paste them into my journal when I get home. In that instance, I use HTML.
When posting at home, I often use Deepest Sender, which takes keyboard shortcuts for text formating (CTRL + B for bold, et cetera), which I like. I'm too lazy to use my mouse. :^P It also accepts HTML, which I also like, since I sometimes do geeky complicated things with tables and all.
