Am in a pretty good mood overall. This is pleasantly surprising as there are a number of trivial and pathetically small but annoying little inconveniences in my life at present.

1. My queen died. Not the pet bee I was trying to turn into a colony, but the commercial queen that came with my experimental colony, the dalmatinus one. Bees haven't dragged her corpse out of the nest yet, but they did shove it on its butt in the corner. So I think we can be sure it's not going to reanimate. Although you can run a colony queenless, old established colonies like this sometimes turn very badly behaved when the queen dies. Nonethess, I did get a bee done today so I can't complain about that - and I was finished with her by lunchtime, leaving me the afternoon to deal with point number 2...

2. My second supervisor is getting me to write his letters again. I understand he's busy, but I really don't have the foggiest idea how to write a letter of recommendation for myself! So there I am, cobbling together something about me being great and needing to do Very Important Research, which a brilliant South African scientist whom I have never met and have only e-mailed once will hopefully agree to sign and send to The Authorities in order to allow me to do research in the country. It all leaves me in a bit of a flap.

3. Last night I had a beautifully relaxing evening, with a nice slow winding-down, drinking decaf, having a long, soothing bath, reading lots and lots of Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (fantastic book - do read if you get chance) and going to bed nice and early feeling completely relaxed. Was asleep within minutes and looking forward to being bright eyed and bushy tailed and in the lab early the following morning.

And then at quarter to EFFING five, the fire alarm went off. Seriously, if I meet anyone from flat 48 who triggered it, I will actually... <censored>. When the fire brigade arrived and the alarm was turned off, it was 5. Took me 2 hours to get back to sleep cos I'd got cold outside and wound up cos of the annoyance of it all, so in the end I got about 6 hours' sleep last night instead of the planned eight and a bit, and decided the earliest I was going to be in the lab was just after 10. Grrrrrgrrrrrrrrrrrargh.

However, supervisor is approaching a state of happy with the database, data collection was OK for once, cheese is very yummy and there's some sort of Bumblebee Identification Nature Walk Thing happening this coming Sunday that I might tag along with for kicks. If they find any bees, that is - it's apparently a terrible year for British bees.

It must be a good year for Washington State bumblebees. One of those big, rusty colored ones flew up my dress yeaterday. I jumped and twirled and it flew out. I said, "I'm not a flower, dammit!" No casualties...

Poor queen bee... Poor Eni...

*chucks baseball at fire alarm*

Hope you're sleeping well tonight, hon.
