I have new bees. I'm naming the queen Levana this time. They're bees from a new company, and they look sweet (if a little on the small side). I managed to connect them up to the flight arena without letting any escape or getting me or anyone else stung. They're now trying to work up the courage to go down the tunnel into the flight arena to see what's there. Hopefully they'll find the sugar feeder I put out for them.

In other news, I seem to be at war with a moron across the hall.

Recently, he started putting in maintenance reports about the door to our block (i.e. 8 flats - we all share a common foyer/stairwell, which has an external door that is supposed to be kept locked at all times, for obvious reasons). Apparently he didn't like the way the outer door banged shut and claimed it made his room shake. 3 floors above. OK, fine. Why he didn't report this in October rather than waiting till June I do not know.

However, what he kept having maintenance do - and now, I believe, is doing himself - is loosening the setting on the auto-closing device (one of those things, that I don't really know the proper name for) so that the door no longer shuts itself properly when left to swing. This means the main door to our block is frequently being left ajar.

I can't remember if I posted about the Random Junkie Pervert Weirdo who wandered off the street into the main building's foyer and made offensive sexual gestures at me, smoked pot in the foyer (and was high on something rather stronger even before that), and peed in the bin...in any case, after meeting him, I am just a bit keen on keeping doors locked and shut against opportunistic whackos. So this situation has displeased me greatly.

I've been tightening up the door closer thingy whenever I find it's too loose, and e-mailed the steward expressing my concerns. She was very good, bless her, and got in touch with management. Of course, management are not known for being clever folks (I refer you to the fridge issue, the hot water issue...) and sent someone to replace the door closer thingy with a new one.

Which puts us in exactly the same situation as before, except that I'm too damned short to tighten the screws that control the closing settings on this new one! GRRRRRRRRRRR. The door still bangs when the closer is tight, and still doesn't shut when the closer is loose (in fact, fails to shut even more spectacularly than before - it actually bounces back open).

I'm thoroughly sick of this whole thing, but can't really just give up, because I'm genuinely concerned that will result in some student being sexually harrassed/mugged on the stairs by an opportunistic whacko. Not sure how to impress on management the gravity of the situation, however.

Ah, that reminds me a bit of when I was living in college and the fellow on my staircase put sticky pads on the doors (including those of the kitchen cupboards) to stop them from slamming and waking her up. Rather suspiciously some got put on Pem's back gate of a similar design (our staircases faced the same direction as the back gate) and made it harder to open the gate/easier to break off your key for about a week before the strength of the gate ripped them apart...

I know of ways to make sure no one passes the doorway. I fear that they are immorral and illegal though.

Well, we could...not that this got us anywhere last time, since he just didn't seem to understand that door not closing is an issue. After about 3 phonecalls to the stewards hasn't helped anything (including the steward who said she'd sent a security officer over to talk to the guy), I'm writing a letter to Residences complaining about the situation. If I come across the guy, I will have Words. Trying to ensure those Words do not include, "You are a wanker and I hope that if someone does get in, they do something nasty to you," will be a great challenge.
