That was fun!
4 August 2007 19:52I got a random phone call in the middle of the afternoon from an acquaintance I know slightly through a mutual friend. He's a computer sciences student and is testing a game and using it to explore psychology - apparently for the experiments he needed three volunteers and one of his had simply failed to turn up. So he wanted to know if I could fill in.
Well, I agreed as long as he gave me 15-20 minutes to make myself presentable, and popped down there. It was an interesting game played primarily via a chat client, where everyone wanted to get the most points, but in any given round two people could only win by cooperating together to get success at the expense of the third person. So everyone was screwing everyone else over and plotting behind each other's backs, which was highly entertaining.
I was even more amused to see that one of the other players was using the nickname "BumbleBee". I almost used that myself, but realised that if either of the other players (who I couldn't see) were people I knew they'd probably guess who I was right away!!
I won game 1, but lost game 2. So that was quite a nice outcome really, I suppose!
Then we found out the underlying purpose of this experiment - apparently it was to analyse the linguistic devices employed by people trying to deceive other people.
Oh, and then we all went to the pub. So I got some nice, low-impact socialisation for an hour or two. Absolutely ideal. And I ran into flatmate's boyfriend and one of his friends, who is gorgeous (but she's straight, woe is me!).
