A friend of mine and awesome!flatmate's went back home for a few weeks a while ago, and asked us to take care of two of her plants: a big Maranta and a little African Violet. Which we did, and both were doing excellently. The African Violet had even flowered.

I come back today to find the African Violet has been COMPLETELY WRECKED as in, every single one of its leaves and flower stalks pulled off.

WTF?!

Needless to say, all flatmates will be duly grilled, including all three people who appear to simultaneously cohabit room A...

ETA: Whoever it was, they also yanked out my little lab cactus aloe doodah thing so all its roots are detached.

If any toddlers visited, maybe.

I'm wondering if it's one of the Room A brigade trying to get revenge on me for the fact that the idiot replacement cleaner on Monday threw his ironing board across the room in the process of "cleaning up"...

I have no idea! The woman came in and, muttering incoherently to herself in some strange, unknown language, she flings the ironing board into a corner, dumps the iron rather hard on the windowsill, and then wipes the table over. I'd borrowed the ironing board from the guy 2 days before and left it on the table with a thank you note - this, she screws up and throws on the floor as well.

What a stupid thing to do. If it's any help, my grandmother was very keen on African violets and you can regrow them from a portion of a leaf. You put the piece of leaf vertically in some compost and then I *think* you have to keep it in the dark for a bit (may be worth checking the exact details, I can ask my mum if you like). Apparently once they get going they regrow quite quickly. I guess alternatively you could just buy another one (/force whoever massacred it to buy another one).

I'd heard that you can regrow them from leaves, but I've never succeeded in doing that in the past - if dark is the key then perhaps I do need to try that. If you have chance to ask your mum, please do! I have lots of leaves to try it with...!

I enquired - I think I must have misremembered the keeping-in-the-dark thing, because apparently it just works like a normal cutting, although it shouldn't be in direct sunlight. You take about half a leaf with a bit of stalk on it and just put it in compost, water it and wait. It can take quite a while... My grandmother had lots and lot sof them, so I was under the impression it was quite easy to do but if you've tried before and not managed then maybe there's some key thing you need to do... unfortunately I don't know what that might be!

The other thing she said was that sometimes they grow little plantlets spontaneously, around the base of the leaves, and it might be worth looking for those if you haven't already. They can just be planted up as usual.

Hope you get somewhere!
