I frequently get random ideas for LJ polls. However, many of these ideas turn out to be somewhat impractical to investigate by means of an LJ poll because the main thing I'm interested in is whether there's a correlation or interaction between two variables. For example, "Do people from country X keep their houses warmer than people from country Y?" or, "Do people who own dogs eat more vegetables?" or whatever.

It would be so nice to be able to collect results on two or more variables and then have LJ spit out a scatter graph of y against x, perhaps even colour-coded for a third variable. Oooh, you could bring in principal component analyses for lots of variables, how cool would that be?

OK, 3am brain. You are SO going to bed now. Any brain that manages to get excited about multivariate stats at this time of night needs keeping out of trouble for its own good...

lmao And I thought my brian was a little off today.

Just for the record, I tend to keep my house and a winter temperature of about 74-76 F. It increases the heating bill a bit, but I just can't stand being cold, which happens easily for me, especially when it comes to my toes. If the toes are cold, I'm not a happy person at all.

In the summer I try to keep it closer to 72 F.

As for the other...

I don't have a dog right now, but I guess you could call me a dog person. Much prefer dogs to cats. Red meat. Gotta love it. I tend to be borderline aenemic, hate iron pills, and spinach is just gross, so I try to make sure I get some red meat at least twice a week. I'm not overly fond of chicken, unless it's dark meat. Pork in just about any form is lovely. Fish is just yummy.

Hmm...how many variables is that?

Well, that comes through in favour of theory number one! (American houses being warmer than British ones.) But I guess a sample size of 1 is not exactly indicative!

I really have no idea whether there might be a relationship between dog ownership and diet but I thought it would be kind of fun to find out.

I tend to red meat binge a bit if I've got a blood donor session coming up soon to make sure I pass the haemoglobin test, but the times when I've forgotten or just not felt like steak then I've still passed, so I guess my iron just sorts itself out. But I'm a bit of a vegetable fanatic so perhaps I'm getting a lot from like cabbage and chickpeas and whatnot! I agree that fish is most excellent, and yeah, I'm a dark meat person when it comes to chicken too. (I've recently developed an unfortunate weakness for duck and pheasant, however... Oops.)

Hooray lots of variables!

IIRC [livejournal.com profile] ptc24 has something suitable?

Ooh, you're right too!! Just poked around on his website and found LJ Grid (http://www.pick.ucam.org/~ptc24/ljgrid.html) which looks like what I had in mind!! Thank you! :D
