  • When I visited my parents the other week, I got myself new snuggle socks. Few things in life make an Eni happier than having warm feet, and these new socks fulfil this purpose most excellently. I also got new snuggle jimjams, which are purple and soft and warm.

  • Sucrose is exhibiting all the symptoms of diabetes. Which is hardly surprising considering she's a "Russian Dwarf" of unknown breeding (so could well be part Campbell's even though she looks and acts more like a Winter White). So no more carrot for Sucrose, unfortunately. Am trying to put together the required high-protein, high-fibre, low-fat and virtually sugar-free diet she's now supposed to need.

  • Rubisco is looking quite well and is maintaining an acceptable, if not fantastic, weight. Her backside is clean and her bedding isn't toooooo bad. Whatever she has might still be a mystery, but less veg, less wheat and less artificial crap seems to help a lot.

  • Went to see [livejournal.com profile] tuxedo_elf and Tuxedo Baby last weekend. He is very cute and so active!

  • Am collecting data from bees at a pretty good rate, and have LOTS to analyse. Bees are a bit odd - they don't seem to start foraging till about 11am, then stop entirely from about 1pm till 3pm, then start up again at 4:30pm, by which point I'm usually too tired to be enthused by the idea of testing another bee, but where possible I've been gritting my teeth and doing it anyway. Was meant to go in and test one today but I was just tooooo exhausted and still have 40-odd undergraduate scripts to mark.

  • Flatmate is back from America. Newest flatmate is nowhere to be seen. We thought he'd be back on Tuesday but if he is he's been staying with his girlfriend as he definitely hasn't been in the house.

  • Ordered myself a CD by Gregorian (Masters of Chant I - will collect full set). YAY.

  • Prince Harry has split up with Chelsey, nooooooo!

  • Jeeves and Wooster is excellent.

I think that'll do for now. I leave you with a random photo.

Poor Sucrose. We had a persian cat who was diabetic - Sir Paddington. Insulin shots twice a day. Poor kitty.

I don't think you can get insulin for hamsters, unfortunately. The internet implies that there's been some success using a drug that works on humans and has worked with some guinea pigs too, but unless you've got a really good exotics vet, calculating the dosage is a bit risky. So mostly the internet suggests a carefully managed diet.

Poor creature. She used to be downright pudgy and now she's boney. :(

Poor baby. I was surprised for some reason that cats use the same insulin we do, and their blood sugar reading are the same as ours. Obviously they can't be managed as closely and using a glucometer is not an option for daily care, so it can be really tricky to manage.

"Few things in life make an Eni happier than having warm feet", I second that. Yay for snuggle socks.

And I would like to hear the story behind that photo ;-)

LOL! Well, I bought the wizard robes on a whim a few months ago now and I generally love wearing them around the house (especially when the house is a bit chilly!). So I was wearing them the evening my flatmates decided to give me completely unexpected Christmas presents. One of the presents was the wizardly hat! Of course, no self-respecting red-robed wizard would normally wear a black hat, but it was so cool that of course I put it on (somehow I don't think any senior wizards are going to come and tell me off!) and wore it all evening. They hung the silver ribbon from the wrapping paper off the hat as well. Beer was opened and drunk, and we lounged around on the stairs as we sometimes do when having silly chatting evenings, and photos were taken...

The hat is wonderful. It's so warm and soft, an excellent fit, and generally I love it. So the robes/hat combo comes out at least a couple of times a week these days. :D (For example, tonight!)

Your poor hammies -- they are so high-maintenance! But worth it though, right? :) It's good that they have a responsible person like you to look after them. Most people wouldn't put so much effort into little animals. :/

Quite an amusing photo-op there. :D

Ah, I love them to pieces, even if I spend half my life googling for people with similar hamster issues and the other half trying out the recommendations that sound sensible. I try to do the best I can for them - I just wish there was a specialist rodent/exotic vet near here! I suspect most vets around here specialise in Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Boxers... :-/

Completely random thought: ironic that a hamster named Sucrose would be diabetic. Hope you get his diet all lined out and Sucrose starts doing better.

I'm also a big fan of snuggly socks to keep my feet warm. The only thing better than snuggly socks is snuggly socks and snuggly jammies worn at the same time.

snuggly socks + snuggly jammies = really happy, warm Rainien

I did notice the irony of it! It could get worse - Quinine could get malaria! But somehow I deem that unlikely... :)

Awwww... I had a diabetic kitty. She lived for 7 years after her diagnosis with a careful diet and twice daily insulin injections. Somehow I don't think it would be as easy with a hamster though. Aw.
