Was teaching today. The teaching lab is used for all kind of practical sessions, including chemistry.

We were doing a simple practical that was entirely theory, on cladistics and whatnot. What could go wrong? Safe, dry, nothing pointy, reactive or allergenic.

Oh no. Because the bench had had something - probably NaOH or CaOH - spilled on it in a previous session that wasn't wiped up. And in a moment of youthful high spirits when I sat on the workbench to see the room better and rest my tired feet without becoming invisible, I managed to position my dear and shapely butt on that spillage.

It soaked through my lab coat AND my combat pants, and I now have a stingy alkali burn on my butt! Owies! *patheticwhinge*

I guess I should learn that benches are not safe to sit on, even in dry practicals.

I suppose I should put some new trousers on before flatmates get home.

In better news, my slot in next week's postgraduate symposium is the very first session of 2 days. Although this is painfully early (9:30am) and to some extent "sets the standard", the audience will be fresh (though not numerous I daresay) and I can get it over and done with so no stressing over things for 2 days the way some people will have to! So I can give it, then relax and stop worrying.

Does mean I'll need to be in at 9am though to get set up, and all the technical problems that can go wrong will go wrong in my sessions. Ah well.

O_o I would laugh - but that is one hell of a place to get a burn XD

LOL Luckily it's only superficial so sitting down doesn't appear to be a problem. At least skin heals - I am mostly just praying my combat pants survive the experience and don't turn to soap!!

Is that likely O_o

I think at worse they'll have an embarrassing hole in them, which can be repaired. But based on how my fingers felt after touching the stuff (soapy) I wouldn't rule out some damage.

What kind of idiot spills spills alkaline solutions and doesn't wipe them up? I mean, seriously.

My hubby once managed to get a nasty burn on his thigh because he didn't stop to think that his pant pocket might not be the best place to transport a radioactive sample, but at least that was his own fault...

The undergraduates are of somewhat variable quality here - some are very bright and alert and others...not so much... It would appear that one of the not-so-much ones managed to make that spillage and didn't notice or couldn't be bothered doing anything, and the technicians honestly don't have the time or the manpower to sanitise every bit of the benches so I guess it was a small oversight.

It's after incidents like this that when I walk round the lab after a practical session and find sweet wrappers and just wonder how long it will take before something really scary happens to someone. :(

... at least your students got a very convincing lesson on why they should be careful around the lab? >_>

Oh no! *Sympathy*. Glad to see from your comments that it is "only" painful and that you aren't horribly maimed. Therefore: gin.

(And double oh no if you have to replace lab coat and combat pants...)

Ah, the lab coat was complimentary from the department and the pants are actually my brothers, so the world won't end in either case - it's only about 1 inch by 1 inch so a small area. I should know better - this is the second chemical burn I've had in these labs!

Nah, it's just a dull tenderness now that I'm out of the contaminated trousers and have washed it clean and put on some moisturiser. I just hope it doesn't look too bad by the time I go swimming on Sunday!

Students are idiots sometimes, I can attest to that. My anatomy lab seems to expect me to clean up their dissection pans and utensils for them. *rolls eyes*

Ewwww! I'm sure cleaning up a few dozen pans of dead animal/plant matter and associated goo is just what you always wanted to do with your lunch break. Not. *sympathy*

I don't remember leaving such a trail of mass destruction behind me when I was an undergraduate, but maybe I did and just wasn't aware of it!

Ouch!

(On the bright side, it might be handy in the long term to have had non-fatal object lessons in lab safety!)

That's ... one up on what happened to my physics teacher in sixth form. In almost identical circumstances he managed to put his hand on some sodium which had not been cleaned up after an incident in a preceding chemistry class. He conducted most of the physics lesson with one hand held under a running tap ...

*compassion*

OWWWWWWWWWWW. That sounds worse if anything - luckily mine happened at the end of the class so I was able to make a speedy escape.

General sympathies of alkali accident and hamster demise (my commenting has been a tad nonexistent of late- amazingly I've been busy). My brother once had an accident with concentrated nitric acid.

OW! Skin seems to be pretty acid-resistant when unbroken, but I bet if he had any cuts or scratches it rapidly became deeply unpleasant.

It seems to have stopped - Wednesday was a bit stingy now and again.

Ironically, the labcoat has cleaned up spotlessly in the washing machine, but the combat pants have a faded blue patch now. How unfair!
