Who else gets REALLY clumsy and cack-handed a day or two before that time of month?

I am a complete klutz today and I'm hoping it clears up before Monday, as I'm meant to be doing fiddly electrode stuff then. When I can't even hold a pair of forceps without dropping them, I don't stand much chance of manipulating a 30 micrometre wide electrode into a 1mm hole, do I?

I think that's not my case.

I guess it must be a Your Mileage May Vary thing!

Hmmm, clumsy I've never noticed. Lowered pain threshold, yes. More temperature sensitive, yes. Clumsy? I'm tempted to try and find out now.

There is so much variation in women at that time! I do get a haywire internal thermostat, this is true. I hadn't given any thought to the pain threshold thing - will observe and see what I think! I guess there are things worse than clumsy, though, so I shouldn't really complain! At least I don't have crying spells like some poor souls do.

Ah, the emotion storms are an early warning sign my contraceptive implant is reaching the end of its lifespan. Seems like there's a certain progesterone level at which my body goes "Something up, hit all the panic buttons so it gets noticed!"

Otherwise things tick along mostly normally, though I can be a little 'sharper' than average. One of my ex's only had friends who turned into raging monsters at that time of the month. I remember his complete shock when it came and went without him noticing.

The pain thing was something I noticed when doing a part-time job in a restaurant. We had an automatic dishwasher/steriliser and the plates came out incredibly hot. Usually I could pick them up after 10 seconds of emerging; for the 3 days preceding the onset of the cycle, it would take me an extra 15-20 seconds to be able to pick them up. Similar principle with rough sex; everything just needs to be a bit more gentle over those few days.

I was sometimes rather touchy and snappy - but was aware of it, and tried to curb it.

Yeah...I think a much lower threshhold for irritation is a common problem!

My gross motor skills aren't great to start with, but I will try to keep a note of when I walk into more doors :)

How's your blood sugar? I get like that when my blood sugar is a bit low - the whole walking into walls type of klutzy. Been a while for me, but it's possible I had bouts of clumsiness during that time too.

As far as I know, there's no reason to expect it to be any different during those few days than at any other time (I eat exactly the same foods and everything) - unless hormone fluctuations mess with the body's insulin/glucagon, of course! If that's the case maybe I should experiment and see if snacking makes a difference at that time of month!

I know I'm more likely to break things, but that could be lack of concentration, which is a big problem round about then. Plus my colour sense is useless, do not ask me to match colours (which is usually part of whatever job I take on :|)

Wow, with the colour matching! That's interesting because I've spoken to a few psychologists who work on human colour vision and sex differences and they hadn't had chance to investigate how it changes in women over the course of the cycle, but other people who have looked at it find out really exciting stuff! Indeed one paper I just found claims that women are best at discriminating colours around ovulation. Weird!

That's fascinating! I just thought I was weird. My period usually coincides with the full moon, and I have an idea I'm more focused and creative around the dark of the moon - which I suppose is when ovulation would happen. Never made the connection before, always blamed the moon.

Yup. I feel for you. I get the clumsy thing, my balance and eyesight deteriorate, and frequently I lose the ability to speak in an aphasic/paraphasic sort of way. It all improves again with the onset of my period... until next time.

Glad I'm not alone! The speaking thing makes sense too - I could definitely imagine that happening sometimes...this general sense of brain not entirely being attached to body!

Could be your hormone levels are extra high. That can cause what you're describing...

Now, since I'm officially in menopause, I can't blame my walking into walls and tables on hormones. Ahaha.

From: [identity profile] enismirdal.livejournal.com
Yup, definitely screwed-up hormones one way or the other. It just seems like a random way to manifest! The number of times I've had to clean up pools of sugar solution in the lab at this time of month after dropping the bee-feeder!

I think we might have had this conversation once together (rather incredibly I think it was probably 5 years ago...) I get hideously clumsy. I drop things, can't tie knots and can nevr find veins.

That does indeed sound familiar, now you mention it. It's funny - for me it's only developed to a large extent recently, in the last year or so. The dropping things is something I can especially sympathise, with, though!
