Spent a lovely long weekend with my dad, being spoiled a bit (he took me out to a nice restaurant, where I had some delightful red mullet and their cheeseboard was soooooooooooo good), spoiling him a bit (made game pie, which did us for dinner, lunch the next day, and lunch for me the day after that) and managed to scrape a lump out of my knuckle by running too fast past a wall, oops.
We watched the birds, visited various gardens, saw bees, saw flowers, enjoyed daddy-daughter time, drank lots of good wine, and because dads are amazing, he fixed all three of my broken laptop chargers. HOORAY! <3 <3 Dad :D :D
I'm now back at home, and have the tasks of publishing some papers (and asserting myself as a scientist in the process so that I get the due credit for my research), applying for jobs, shifting a mammoth pile of around 120 undergraduate scripts that need marking (we're getting there...), writing more grant applications, rereading my thesis until I know it inside out, making sure I also know ever reference I cite decently well (or at least, as well as the examiners do and preferably better!), etc. Surprisingly busy for someone who currently lives in a limbo between "student" and "unemployed".
Nonetheless, I will attempt to get going on the writing again now - I think I have some brain back for it! Also, I might have to start taking the odd beta job here and there again. Heee.
Our washing machine started making banging nosies and smelling vaguely like burning electricals, so we decided that rather than risking a messy accident by continuing to use it, we'd go ahead and replace it right away. We'd discussed with the landlady recently that the washing machine seemed to be going downhill and being amazing, she'd OK'd us to do some research and pick a reasonably-priced washer-dryer and order that. So our new washer-dryer arrived this morning. It's a slightly ugly Hotpoint thing, but the reviews are good and because it's an ugly colour, it was around £100 cheaper than the more attractive white version! In any case, it took 36 hours from us ordering it to it arriving, there were no installation problems and so far it seems to work, so based on our experience so far, I can recommend Boots Kitchen Appliances (which is actually DRL Ltd., whover they are, and interestingly they also do Sainsbury's Kitchen Appliances...go figure!). Hopefully our experience will continue to be good!
I feel I need to start making a list of Things To Do When I Am Rich (like that's ever going to happen...) so that if I ever do find myself to be rich, I will remember all the things I had great ambitions to do. So far it includes:

- Travelling: Ethiopia, Mongolia, Australia, South Africa more, Eastern Europe, Peru, Argentina, New Caledonia, Greenland
- Buying a Sruli Recht Blankoat
- Contacting the Pegas Hotel in Brno and persuading them to ship me several barrels of their 12° dark lager because it is beautiful
- Painting an interior wall of my house white and letting everyone who visits draw on it in permanent marker pen (because if it's MY WALL I can do what I like)
- Converting a room of my house into a guinea pig room, with the whole floor area devoted to letting the guinea pigs run free and play and hide
