Honey, I'm home!
11 October 2010 20:39Got back about 4 hours ago from a 1.5-week holiday in Italy! It was really fun and I loved hanging out with the Enidad, seeing places I'd never been to before, experimenting with a tiny bit of bad Italian and drinking yummy yummy coffee!
Discovered good things: ceci (a kind of chickpea-flour fritter thingy), caffé d'orzo (roasted-barley based fake coffee - sort of similar to the stuff I drink a lot here in the UK so was delighted to be able to get cappucino without caffeine that's not just decaf coffee), limoncino (lemon-based spirit stuff - don't normally do spirits but decided I wanted to experiment; tried grappa, wasn't thrilled, then tried limoncino and decided it was rather jolly). Bought big bottle of limoncino to take home. Also various kinds of sweets and chocolate.
Developed a worrying fondness for Mannerism art and 15th-16th century Italian painters/sculptors in general. Saw a very large bush cricket.
I also missed work quite a lot. It's funny how fond I've become of the usual gang there. I loved the holiday but a part of me was quite homesick quite a lot. It'll be nice to get back into the old routines I think.
At some point I will hopefully manage to update with a subset of photos and some more detailed commentary on my impressions of Pisa, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Bologna, and Venice (and the surrounding islands)...
