  • I did my PhD graduation yesterday. Dad came down and was all proud father-like and seemed to enjoy it. I enjoyed it too except it was VERY COLD and I was woefully underdressed, having had to abandon my usual apparel (tights and combats, Doc Martens, thick sweater, 2 t-shirts, windproof jacket, hat, scarf, gloves) in favour of Pretty Formalwear. Also, they messed up the order they fed us up on to stage in, so I was called out in the middle of the Master's students and there was some frantic shuffling of papers and announcements once they realised I was dressed in claret not black and therefore patently one of these things was not like the others... Also, there were screeching undergrads at the back, wolf-whistling and squealing when their mates went up like they were some sort of blooming movie star at the Oscars. Also, the buffet sucked. Also, my gown had a grease stain on the lapel. Still, my supervisor turned up and congratulated me, and dad was there, and I saw lots of my beloved Londony friends, and I look quite smart in the video dad made.

  • Does anyone know where I might be able to find out about ceilidhs taking place in Kent? CRI and I want to go to one as it turns out we both enjoy them, but it's a matter of locating nice friendly ones!

  • Currently corresponding a lot with water company, because they are overbilling me and we can't work out why. Also going to start nagging council soon, as they've stopped collecting my recycling without explaining why. Not OK!

  • Went to see Monsters last night (rest of gang were seeing HP7part1 but I am boycotting, and CRI seemed to share my opinion!) and enjoyed that. :)

I think that's pretty much all for now. There are rumours of a Mystery Meat Night this weekend where one of the guys is buying a pile of random meat from a good local butcher, cooking it and then we all eat it. Sounds fun, if not remotely veggie-friendly!

Thank you!! CRI has got me a PhD comics t-shirt with "Doctor" on the front and "(of Philosophy)" on the back. It's very cute.

Thanks! PhDs do seem to be a bit like that, don't they? One anticlimax after another! Even though (aside from receiving the certificate in the post), I'm officially "done" now, I don't feel done because I've got so used to waiting to see what the next bureaucratic hoop is that I need to jump through!

Try the flaming hoop in full regalia?
What is your quarrel with HP7. I spent a long time in the coalition days treating HP and Warner Brothers as allies of Coca Cola but that was a long time ago.

I read the book and really didn't think it was very good, especially the ending. Just my opinion - I know some people loved it. I decided the book was so disappointing that I didn't want to waste several hours of my life seeing the movie(s). So I watched giant squidlike aliens killing everyone instead, heee.
