Angel started(? at least was the first invasion onto my list) a google bombing attempt when the google hit for "jew" lead to some random nazi-esque site. This has lead to some of the more unsuccessful google bombs ever, Enismerdals one with no links being closely rivalled by Naaths one in a frends only post that google couldn't see.
Heya, I noticed you were at St Catharines college, what do you study? sorry to be nosey im just interested in finding out more about the college. What's the accommodation like? Lea
No problem - always happy to talk to people :) Sorry I've taken a couple fo days to reply, but I've been away :)
I'm a BioNatSci, taking Evolution and Behaviour, Physiology of Organisms, Biology of Cells and Quantitative Biology.
Catz...well, I love it. The people are nice, there are some really really good supervisors (e.g. Matt) and some rather less spectacular ones (e.g. Sergei). The accommodation is nice IMHO, but possibly not as swanky as at some of the colleges with more money. But it's pretty cheap, which is nice.
1st years live on site; some but not all have ensuite rooms 2nd years live at St Chad's, which is a newish building, hideous on the outside, rather nicer inside, with flats for 4/5 people (private bedrooms, shared kitchen + 2 bathrooms per flat). They're really nice :) 3rd years get variable rooms depending on their 1st year exam results. The best are very nice. Some but not all are ensuite.
My room's towards the cheaper end of Catz rooms as well - it's fairly small, but not pokey, isn't ensuite but has a sink and plenty of storage. Showers/kitchen are on the same floor as my room, and there are only 6 students and 1 fellow on my corridor, so there's not usually a bit queue for facilities.
The kitchen is not badly equipped, but lacks an oven (although we get one at Chad's next year). Also could do with modernising/redecorating.
St Catherine's one real failing, at least as I see it, is its lack of gardens. Doh! But it more than makes up for this in having a central location, nice people, a good bar and a certain 1st year vet ;)
Is the first year vet Kate by any chance? Ive been asking her questions about Catz too, lol im interogating everyone!
I dont suppose you could me a general idea about the other colleges im considering could you? Im also looking at Clare, Downing,Pembroke Magdalene and St Johns, also do you know much about what the mature colleges are like. As you can see i need to narrow my options down a bit for a open day!
Well...I've seen one Clare first year room and it's gorgeous. Also, grounds/buildings very pretty. Downing grounds look lovely, as do Pembroke ones, and both are well-located for central stuff. The Downing people I know are very nice. What I've seen of the inside of Pembroke (i.e. the bar) is cool. Magdalene is pretty, but not as modern in rooms as some of the others - I think lifes_a_dream stayed over one night there and concluded that the college might look nice from the outside, but she was relieved to return to New Hall where all the facilities were so much newer.
John's, of course, has a lot of money, so I think it's pretty cushy, but I don't really know anyone at John's at present.
Don't know much about mature colleges - you could ask compilerbitch - she's at St Edmund's. The mature ones are mostly further out though, so more travelling. I have supervisions with a guy from Wolfson - I think he's the only person on the Biology of Cells course at that college, so he comes across to Catz. He never seems to complain about his college, so I guess it's OK. Lucy Cavendish is meant to be nice, too.
To tell the truth, as long as you're not really picky, virtually any college is a good bet. The one I've heard some dubious stuff about is New Hall - apparently a fair number of people end up there not by application but by being pooled, and I've heard quite a few first years have dropped out in the last two terms. Although whether that actually means anything, I'm not sure.
Thank you again:) This is gonna be so hard! Which has the nicest accommodation do you think? any cons about the places ive mentioned? This is hard! And im just trying to narrow it down for a open day let alone picking one to put on application! Which would you recommened?
Im also a bit wary about applying to very oversubscribed colleges, because i want put myself in a good position for recieveing a place, but im still torn between vet med and nat sci.
Id love to do vet med but its so competitive, i think id stand a bettr chance with nat sci and i do find it interesting?!?!
Argh, so much to think about! sorry to ramble! Thanks again:) Lea
I don't really know ever so much about the accomodation at most of the colleges you're looking at, and the ones I have seen, it's been literally 1-2 rooms, whcih isn't really representative (if you saw a room in E-block at Catz, you'd come away saying, "Catz rooms are tiny but funky," whereas if you saw just a room in Bull, you'd say, "They're OK, but a bit old-fashioned and tatty - nice size though."). The one Clare room I've seen was lurvely. The second year rooms I've seen at the girls' colleges were also very nice, although one at Newnham didn't have a sink in the room (bad!!).
The main downside at John's is that everyone pretends they hate you! Actually, they don't, but they (especially the Trinity ones) do tend to make jokes sometimes (have you heard the song, "I'd rather go to Oxford than St John's"?)
I'd say, try and take a peek at all of them on Open Days if you have a chance - I'm sure if you nag some of the Cambridge LJ lot a bit, they'd be able to offer a guided tour of their colleges ;) (technically, the buildings are off-limits to non college memebers, but as long as you're discreet, you can get away with it).
As for Vet v. NatSci, I'm glad I'm doing NatSci - Kate (yeah, it's Kate, hehehe) has to do pretty much 9-5, 5 days a week. I get a much lighter practical schedule (although I do have lectures Saturday morning). Also, I get to do plants, and she doesn't, and I like plants. I also get to do evolution, which Vets don't do. But the downside is that we have to do a lot more Maths :( But she has to do stinky dissections of horses' hooves and sheep's rumens, when the worst I ever got was a fresh frog's leg!
But there's a hell of a lot of crossoever between the two courses, so you get a lot of the same stuff whichever way you go. Kate gets more of the anatomy and the applied stuff - she knows all about nerve bundles, the names of muscles, and how to raise my jugular vein (which is really freaky!!)
The questions I guess you should ask are: do you have any very specific requirements for a college? - of not, any of the ones you listed will probably be fine, to tell the truth. The vast majority of people, whatever the college, love their time here. And also, how much do you want to be a vet? Because it's a hard course once you're on it, and it's 6 years of being a hard course. NatSci has more options in the first year - as in, you can add a bit of Physical stuff, or Chemistry, if you don't want to do 3 Bio modules.
I take it you've already read the prospectus and checked out the college websites for the ones you're interested in?
