24 April 2004 20:36I've been contacted by one of those real, genuine language scholars who actually understand Sindarin as Tolkien created it. He's been educating me. I'm very pleased.
I sent him a list of all the most common "Sindarin" endearments from fanfiction I've read, asking, "Which of these are technically incorrect?" The answer: not a single one. Melamin, Vanimaer, Lirimaer, Morier, Melme; all of them, incorrect. Meleth nín is allowed. Im mela lle, the favourite phrase of LOTR fanfic writers ("I love you") is also wrong. The correct version is: Melon le. Some other nice endearments are: Melda nín (my beloved), Írima (lovely one) and Mel an cuil nín (Love of my life).
Consequently, I am now a happy advocate of this amazing site. Let the tide of Grelvish ("Sindarin" gleaned from Grey Company Elven Phrase Book which is apparently Very Wrong) stop here!!
EDIT: Have received confirmation that Melethron/Melethryn (sing./pl.) are grammatically correct but contrived (apparently, he hadn't seen this word before, being not a slash person, I guess). Just in case you wondered.

Date: 24 Apr 2004 22:33 (UTC)OOH! We should create a Grelvish Awareness site or something!!!
Let me direct you to this lovely site. Someone took all the phrases on the Grelvish site and turned it into actual Sindarin. :D
