And all you can hear is this strange whistling rasping snorting noise as they breathe in and out? And after a bit, you're more or less ready to do an emergency trachaeotomy in order to stop the damn noise?

Yeah, well the grinding whirring noise coming from my hard drive was having much the same effect on my nerves. Every 2 seconds or so, it went, "Grrr-rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr." It was driving me mad.

Now I am listening to a faint, peaceful hum, and Trumpington Street outside. I have fixed the problem.

For some reason, tilting the computer so one side is about 2cm higher then the other has stopped the noise altogether. It's sooo nice. I now have half a chance at getting that afternoon nap I was planning.

This University discriminates very strongly against nocturnal people. I know [livejournal.com profile] naath has mentioned this before, but I shall reiterate it. I function best between the hours of 3pm and 1am. However, lectures and practicals run from 9am to 5pm. This means there are no more than two hours on any given day when I am in scheduled classes that coincide with my optimum period. However, by the time I've reached my optimum period on such days, I've been on the go steadily since 9 or 10am anyway, and so I have stopped being optimal and will, by that time, be thinking of tea, cakes and bread and jam.

The University needs to follow the wise example set by Caltech and run labs from 10opm-midnight and such. It would be far better for me.

I love the fact that I'm not the only person who begins to think of tea and cakes by about mid afternoon. :*D

I think society as a whole discriminates against nocturnal people. I'm vaugely pleased that in Third and Fourth year they give you a key to the E.S. department so you can basically work whenever. Turning up at 9:30pm and pulling an all-nighter in the computer lab is certainly an interesting experiance. Then again they do have issues about fire safety and running experiments overnight so they do have reasons for this.
